Description

Learn how to make delicious Peeps Rice Krispies Treats. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal (or your favorite crispy rice cereal)
  • 1 (10-ounce) bag Peeps marshmallow chicks or bunnies (about 12 Peeps)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, but adds great depth)
  • Non-stick cooking spray or extra butter for greasing the pan

Substitution tips: If you can’t find Peeps, traditional marshmallows work just fine—though you’ll miss that colorful pop. For a dairy-free version, swap the butter with coconut oil or your favorite plant-based butter. And if Rice Krispies aren’t your thing, puffed wheat or corn flakes make a great crunchy alternative.

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray or butter. This step is key to making sure your treats come out cleanly—trust me, I’ve learned the hard way!
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t brown or burn. Once melted, add the Peeps marshmallows to the pan.
  3. Stir continuously with a heat-proof spatula as the Peeps melt, about 4–6 minutes. You’ll see the colorful marshmallows turn into a gooey, sticky base. If you want, stir in the vanilla extract once smooth for a subtle flavor boost.
  4. Remove the pan from heat immediately to avoid overcooking the marshmallow mixture.
  5. Quickly pour the Rice Krispies cereal into the melted Peeps mixture. Fold gently but thoroughly, making sure every bit of cereal is coated with the marshmallow mixture. This is a fun step—I often let Eli help me here, and it’s a great way to get little hands involved.
  6. Transfer the sticky cereal mixture into the prepared pan. Using a buttered spatula or wax paper, press the mixture evenly into the pan. Don’t press too hard—you want to keep that light, crispy texture.
  7. Allow the treats to cool and set at room temperature, about 30 minutes. Patience here is a virtue; it makes cutting and serving a breeze.
  8. Once set, slice into squares and serve. These treats are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored for later.
