Description

Learn how to make delicious Refreshing Strawberry Basil Smash Cocktail Recipe. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 6 fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered (plus extra for garnish)
  • 8 fresh basil leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
  • 2 ounces gin or vodka (choose your favorite spirit)
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice (about half a lemon)
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup (see substitution tips below)
  • Club soda or sparkling water, to top off
  • Ice cubes

If you don’t have simple syrup on hand, don’t worry. You can easily make it by dissolving equal parts sugar and water over low heat until clear, then cooling it down. Or, for a natural twist, swap it out for honey syrup (honey diluted with a bit of warm water) to add a subtle floral sweetness. If fresh basil isn’t available, mint leaves work as a lovely substitute, bringing a different but equally refreshing herbal note.

Instructions

  1. Place the quartered strawberries and basil leaves into a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker.
  2. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently press down on the strawberries and basil to release their juices and aroma. Be careful not to over-muddle the basil to avoid bitterness—just enough to bruise the leaves and bring out their flavor.
  3. Add the fresh lemon juice and simple syrup to the muddled fruit and basil mixture.
  4. Pour in your choice of gin or vodka. When I first started experimenting with this cocktail, I found gin’s botanical notes complemented the basil beautifully, but vodka offers a cleaner, more neutral base if you prefer.
  5. Fill the glass or shaker with ice, then shake or stir vigorously for about 10-15 seconds. This chills the drink and helps blend the flavors.
  6. Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice cubes. If you like a little texture, you can skip straining and pour everything in directly—just be ready to stir occasionally.
  7. Top off with club soda or sparkling water to add a refreshing fizz.
  8. Garnish with a sprig of basil and a strawberry on the rim for that inviting, homemade touch.

One tip I picked up hosting those college dinners is to taste as you go—after the first shake, sample the mixture before adding soda. You can always adjust with a splash more lemon or syrup to suit your preference. And for families or gatherings where some prefer non-alcoholic drinks, omit the spirit and double the club soda—it’s just as refreshing!
