Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Mix in the melted butter until a crumbly dough forms.
  3. Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the base. Bake for 10 minutes, then let it cool slightly.
  4. While the base is cooling, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cornstarch, and salt in a large saucepan.
  5. Place the saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil. The custard should coat the back of a spoon, taking about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Pour the custard over the cooled base, smoothing out the surface with a spatula.
  7. Bake the assembled squares for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and the custard is set.
  8. Allow the squares to cool at room temperature before chilling in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to set completely.
