Description
Learn how to make delicious Vanilla Custard Cream Squares. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 3 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Feel free to substitute the whole milk with almond or oat milk for a dairy-free version. You can also swap the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend if needed.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Mix in the melted butter until a crumbly dough forms.
- Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the base. Bake for 10 minutes, then let it cool slightly.
- While the base is cooling, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cornstarch, and salt in a large saucepan.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil. The custard should coat the back of a spoon, taking about 8-10 minutes.
- Pour the custard over the cooled base, smoothing out the surface with a spatula.
- Bake the assembled squares for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and the custard is set.
- Allow the squares to cool at room temperature before chilling in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to set completely.
